The clients wanted to add a second floor and remodel the ground floor. A principle objective was to not make it seem like another "second story addition" that are so common in the neighborhood. From the second floor they have a stunning view of downtown Seattle which they wanted to maximize. Designing the project to be compact and yet open was very important and is a principle of our work. The result is a brick and stucco structure where the front of the upper floor is pavilion like and the interior/exterior blend. The brick cradles the stucco as they interlock, inseparable from one another. The window system is a piece of furniture and the roof is a cap which contains the complexities of the house.
