The challenge this project presented was to create a meaningful space which reflected the idiosyncratic needs of the owners while simplifying the existing plan. The owners, a professional couple, have interests with unique space requirements. She is a textile artist needing ample studio space; He has a passion for music and ethnic dance. They wanted the house to "work" by molding to their needs. Prior to the remodel the house had a congested layout with no functional or meaningful space. Very little area was actually added (225 sf), but the house "lives" much more spaciously. In the new sequence each space has its own fluid and efficient quality. Even the stairs are conceived as livable space with a tall library and study at the landing. The new house has fewer rooms but all are distinct in their quality of space and light. One of the biggest challenges was interiorizing the light and garden space. With the use of "monitors" light is captured at all different times of the day and year, bending, curving and softening it.
